• Obituary: On 16 June 1910 at Henderson, Vance Co., NC, Death of Mr. A.H. Ball - - Vance county has lost by death another honored and worthy citizen. Mr. Alpheus H. Ball died at his home a few miles from Henderson about 3 o'clock Tuesday morning, June 7th. He had been in feeble health a long time but was able to be about his business, his visits to town being less frequent, however, during recent months. Last winter Mr. Ball had a severe attack of grip from the effects of which he never entirely recovered. His friends had noticed his failing condition and the fatal termination was not altogether a surprise to them.
  Mr. Ball was 77 years old. He leaves a widow but not children. Of his immediate relatives he is survived by a sister, Mrs. Silus Powell, of Henderson, and a brother, Mr. James H. Ball, of Vance county.
  In the death of "Uncle Alley" Ball, as he was familiarly known, a good man and worthy citizen has passed away. He was honest, upright, industrius; a true friend and good neighbor; a brave soldier of the Confederate Army and a loyal citizen of our reunited country.
  The body was laid to rest in the old family burying ground at the Silus Powell place at 3 o'clock Wednesday afternoon, Rev. J.A. McClure conducting the service. The kid gloves that Mr. Ball wore 27 years ago at his wedding, were put on him when he was buried. He was buried with Masonic honors he having been a member of the order for a great many years. When the lodge in Henderson was reorganized after it had gone down Mr. Ball was one of the Charter members.
  There was a large attendance at the funeral, Masons, neighbors and friends turning out in large numbers to pay a tribute of respect to the dead man who in life was held in such high regard and warm esteem by those who knew him.⁴

As far as the family knew, she was as well as usual until 9:30 O'clock that morning, she had an attack of apoplexy from which she died in about an hour. She was buried in her father's family grave yard on Wednesday morning, May 1st.³

  Mr. Ball was a retired computer operator at Revco Inc. A United States Army Veteran of World War II, he served with the 9th Armored Division. He was a member of South Henderson Church of God and was affectionately known as “the Collard Man”.
  
  Funeral services will be held Tuesday, Aug. 31, 2010, at 3 p.m., at South Henderson Church of God, conducted by the Rev. Gary Harper, the Rev. Bill Spence, and the Rev. George Williams. Burial, with Military Honors, will follow at Sunset Gardens.
  
  Surviving are two daughters, Martha Frances Ball Hernandez, and husband Evencio, of Henderson, and Faye B. Orr, and husband Tim, of Kittrell; three sons, David Hampton Ball Sr., and wife Marsha, of Henderson, James Rogers Ball Sr., and wife, Nancy, of Henderson, and William Wayne Ball, and wife Susan, of Loveland, Colo; a foster son, Jerry LeRoy, and wife Shirley, of High Point; 13 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by three sisters, Mary Lee Roberson Reavis, Martha Jane Ball Reavis, and Mary Elizabeth Finch Smith; and four brothers, Clarence Norman Ball, Jessie Thomas Ball, William Henry Moseley, and Bryant O’Neal Robertson.
  
  The family will receive friends Monday, from 7 to 8:30 p.m., at
  
  Flowers Funeral Home. All other times, they will be at the home, 1840 N. Clearview Drive, Henderson.
  
  Serving as active pallbearers will be James Ball Jr., Marty Owens, David Ball Jr., Lance Harlow, Dorando Terry, Macon Abbott, Randy Cash, and Ronnie Evans.
