Obituary: On 13 April 1996 at Durham, Durham Co., NC, HENDERSON -- Mr. Macy Livingston Hoyle, Sr., 84, died April 12, 1996 in Nashville, TN. He was born Nov. 6, 1911 in Henderson, son of the late David Lee and Mary Louise Harris Hoyle.
Services will be conducted at 2 PM Monday, April 15, at Carey Baptist Church, with the Rev. John Hackworth officiating. The family will receive friends in the Church Fellowship Hall immediately following the service.
Mr. Hoyle resided most of his adult life in Smithfield, where he was a member of Centenary United Methodist Church and a leader in numerous civic affairs of the community. He relocated to Tennessee in 1992 to reside with his daughter and son-in-law, Bernadette ('Sandy') and Alan Lee Bolick.
In 1948, Mr. Hoyle retired from his position as production director for the Smithfield Herald, where he had served 40 years. Mr. Hoyle's career began as a linotype operator at The Franklin Times in Louisburg. He worked for the Reidsville Review and Raleigh News & Observer before joining the Smithfield Herald in 1944. Upon his retirement, Thomas J. Lassiter, former editor and publisher of the paper, in a column detailing Mr. Hoyle's 40 years of service, wrote, 'Mediocrity was never acceptable to Macy Hoyle.' In citing Mr. Hoyle's contributions to his profession, Lassiter wrote, 'All North Carolina journalism is indebted to him.'
Mr. Hoyle's contributions to mechanical excellence in the North Carolina newspaper community is reflected in his service as a founder and the first chairman of the statewide Newspaper Mechanical Conference, established in the 1950s under auspices of the N.C. Press Association. He was the first recipient of the Al Resch Award recognizing distinguished service to the Conference.
Mr. Hoyle's lifetime accomplishments were not limited to his profession. In 1984, Mr. Hoyle, a member and former president of the North Carolina Wildlife Federation, was inducted into the Federation's prestigious 'North Carolina Conservation Hall of Fame.' He was a frequent visitor in the North Carolina State Legislature, lobbying for numerous bills protecting the state's wildlife and natural resources. For many years, his column, 'Let's Talk Wildlife,' was published in The Smithfield Herald and frequently reprinted in Federation publications.
He is survived by one daughter, Bernadette ('Sandy') Hoyle Bolick, of Hendersonville, TN; one step son, John Lindsay Ferguson, III, of White Oak; two sisters, Marguerite Smith, of Henderson, and Grace Barrett, of Wilmington; two brothers, Arch Clark Hoyle, Sr. and William Hundley Hoyle, both of Henderson; five grandchildren, Heather F. Hoyle, of Mocksville, Christine F. Hoyle, of Charlotte, and Kelly Hoyle Bolick, Zachary Lee Bolick, and Blair Woodlief Bolick, all of Hendersonville, TN; one step grandchild, Jaime Ferguson, of White Oak; and 14 nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his son. Macy Livingston Hoyle, Jr. and his brother, David Leonidas Hoyle.³

Obituary: On 24 August 1915 at Wake Co., NC, Clark: Martha Hoyle was born in Warren County, June 26, 1846. May 18, 1865, she was happily married to George Clark. Unto them eight sons and one daughter were born. These all live except one son, and like their parents, they all have a place in the Church. The father died more than twenty years ago. The mother lived to see her children all grown and now with them thirty six grandchildren mourn their loss. Three brothers and two sisters also survive her. Sister Clark had never been sick much until three weeks ago. Typhoid Fever got a hold upon her, which proved too much for her strength. Sunday afternoon, August 22, 1915 she went to meet her husband and other loved ones in the glory land.
She had been a faithful member of the Methodist Episcopal Church, south, fifty-five years and was greatly loved by all. Her body was tenderly laid to rest at Wakefield in Wake County. Many God’s grace abound to all the bereft ones till in heaven they meet her again.--G. W. Starling.⁶

BURLINGTON - Paul Hoyle, age 80, of 4000 Birkdale Court, passed away Wednesday, September 3, 2008, at Alamance Regional Medical Center.
A native of Vance County, N.C., he was the son of the late Earnest Edward and Mary Delilah Faulkner Hoyle and the husband of the late Betty Hicks Hoyle for 59 years. Mr. Hoyle held the H&R Block franchise for 45 years after being in management with Western Electric for 10 years. He was a longtime member of Holly Hill Baptist Church, a former director with Carolina Bank, an avid golfer, enjoyed his Alaska fishing trips with his best friends for the last 16 years, he loved Duke basketball and enjoyed many Final Fours. He was a graduate of Elon College and a Navy Seabee.
Survivors include his daughters, Jan Rene Hoyle of Burlington, Teresa Lynn H. Strausbaugh and husband, Bill, of Burlington, and Robin Leigh H. Smith and husband, Lenwood, of Columbia, S.C; grandchildren, Amy Hoyle, Bill and Laura Strausbaugh and Katie and Lissie Smith; brothers, Beacham H. Hoyle of Burlington, the Rev. Bobby Hoyle of Virginia Beach, Va; sisters, Catherine Michael, Ruth Qualls and Pauline Tate, all of Burlington, and Bertha Mae Mullins of Cincinnati, Ohio.
He was preceded in death by his wife; parents; brothers, Alfred Hoyle, the Rev. Earl Hoyle, Robert B. Hoyle, Henry T. Hoyle, Vernon G. Hoyle and Ernest W. Hoyle; sister, Rosa Robinson. Paul was a husband, father, friend, brother and "dad" to many.
Funeral services will be held at 9 a.m. Friday at Grove Park Baptist Church by the Rev. Garry Baldwin, the Rev. Drew Gay and the Rev. Jonathan Harrison. Interment will follow in Alamance Memorial Park. Mr. Hoyle will remain at Lowe Funeral Home and Crematory until taken to Holly Hill Baptist Church at 5 p.m. Thursday, where the family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m.³

Mrs. Robinson was owner and operator of the former Robinson's Flowers and also worked with Friendly Florist. She was a member of South Henderson Pentecostal Holiness Church and was a member and former teacher of the Ladies Bible Class. She was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary, having served as President.
The funderal will be conducted a 3 p.m. Friday at South Henderson Pentecostal Holliness Church by the Rev. Frank Sollamon. Burial will be in Liberty-Vance United Church of Christ at Epsom.
Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Dorothy "Dot" R. Overby of Henderson and Mrs. Janice R. Boyd of Durham; two sons, Hugh "Sambo" Robinson and Ernest Alllie Robinson both of Henderson, four sisters, Mrs. Ruth H. Qualis and Mrs. Catherine H. Michael, both of Burlington; Mrs. Bertha H. Mullins of Cincinnati, Ohio, and Mrs. Pauline H. Tate of Elon College; seven brothers, the Rev. Earl Hoyle, Paul Hoyle, and the Rev. Beacham Hoyle, all of Burlington, The Rev. Robert Hoyle of Patrick Springs, Va., Wheeler Hoyle of Graham, Alfred M. Hoyle of Palm Coast, Fla., and the Rev. Bobby Hoyle of Greensboro; eight grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren.⁴
