He served as president of the Granville County Chamber of Commerce in 1963, was active in the local Kiwanis Club and was a founding member of the Men’s Garden Club of Oxford. He also served as district commissioner of the Boy Scouts for the John Penn District.
  
  He joined the U.S. Marine Corp in early 1941, and was in the first wave of the First Marine Division assault on the island of Guadalcanal in the Solomon Island chain on Aug. 7, 1942. He was awarded the Purple Heart for his injuries.
  
  He is survived by a sister, Joyce P. Furgerson of Chase City, Va. He was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Frances Speed Peebles in 2007; and five brothers, Stafford, Gordon, Cecil, Troy and Lester Peebles.
  
  Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Eakes Funeral Chapel in Oxford by the Rev. Dr. Steve Bolton. Burial will follow in Elmwood Cemetery. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 12:30 to 2 p.m. at the Eakes Funeral Home in Oxford.²

  HENDERSON — Mary Ella Pegram Grissom, age 89, a resident of 1102
  Bane Ave., died Tuesday, May 19, 2009, at Maria Parham Medical Center.
  Born in Vance County on Oct. 8, 1919, she was the daughter of the late Walter R. Pegram and Mary Champion Pegram. Mrs. Grissom was a member of the first graduating class of Henderson
  High School in 1937. She was a member of the First United Methodist
  Church where she was a member of the
  Christine Jenkins Sunday School Class. She worked for many years at Winn
  Dixie where she met and befriended many people. She loved working “after
  retirement” at the Holiday Inn, Baldwins, and Paper Lights. She was
  a friend to everyone she met. She enjoyed using her “excellent” cooking
  skills to prepare food for her family and for those in need. She also enjoyed
  playing card games with her family and friends, and spent her last years
  at Senior Citizens Home where she was the “Bingo Queen”. She had many
  friends there, including her late roommate, Esther Eatmon. She was
  grateful to all the staff, especially all the aides who helped her so much.
  Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday at First United Methodist
  Church by the Rev. George Speake. Burial will follow at Sunset Gardens.
  She is survived by her husband, Walter H. “Juny” Grissom, Jr. of the home; three daughters, Patricia G. Steed (Leon), Mary Ann G. Parrott (Jim) of Henderson, and Nadine G. Pierpoint of
  Raleigh; one son, Dennis Michael Grissom of Henderson; eight
  grandchildren, Harley M. Parrott, Dixon C. Parrott, Kevin D. Pierpoint, Karen
  P. Shankle, Tracy G. Roberson (Tony), Carolyn S. Hildebrand (Doug), Cliff L. Steed III (Deana), and Catherine S. DeVries (Dave); and 12 greatgrandchildren; a very special
  lifelong friend, Gladys Hensley of Henderson; and two special friends in
  the nursing home, Mrs. Gupton and Mrs. Pulley. The family will receive
  friends today from 7-8:30 p.m. at J.M. White Funeral Home. Serving as active
  pallbearers will be W.G. Twisdale, Dickie Twisdale, Ted Grissom, Ed
  Wheeler Grissom, Ronald Grissom and Jimmy Richardson.²
