• Obituary: Circa 20 December 2006 at NC Rev. Clyde W. Faulkner, 94, of Brasstown died Tuesday (Dec. 19, 2006) at the residence of his son. He was a native of Vance County, NC, but had lived in Clay County for over 25 years. He was the son of the late Omegia V. and Martha Ann Vaughn Faulkner and the husband of the late Hazel Wall Faulkner, who died Dec. 1, 1996. Clyde entered the ministry in 1943 and served at Cape Hatteras. He served various churches in the Western North Carolina Conference of the United Methodist Church, including an assignment to the Hayesville Circuit from 1961 to 1967. He returned to Clay County in the early 1980's after his first retirement from active ministry. In 1985, he was again appointed to serve churches in the local area until his second retirement in June 2006. Over the years, he led many building mission teams to countries in Latin America. His last mission trip was to Costa Rica when he was 88 years old. His involvement in the local community included his regular presence every Saturday, in the summer, at the Mountain Valley Farmer's Market on the square in Hayesville. He could also be found behind his personally prepared pot of chicken and dumplings at the annual Holy Smoke fundraiser in Brasstown. In his last years, some of his most enjoyable moments were spent at Hayesville High School athletic events. Surviving are a son, Clyde W. Faulkner Jr. and wife, Karla; two grandchildren, Michael L. Faulkner of Denver, CO and Lynne F. Smith of Atlanta, GA; a step-granddaughter, Donna A. Brat of Atlanta; and five great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM Saturday (Dec. 23) in the Chapel of Ivie Funeral Home, Murphy with Rev. Dallas Crowder, Rev. Jacob Kyker, and Dr. J. Alexander Ward officiating. Interment will be in the Hickory Stand United Methodist Church Cemetery. Pallbearers: Ted Smith, James Shelton, Horace Roberts, Eddie Martin, Harold Lance, Jason Faulkner, Leroy Coker, and Dan Brat. Honorary pallbearers: Bud Brock, Sylvester J. Gernert, Jimmy Johnson, Max Coltrane, and Aden Martin. The family will receive friends from 5-8 Friday evening at the Ivie Funeral Home, Murphy. In lieu of flowers, please make a memorial gift to your local church as Rev. Faulkner believed strongly in supporting your local church.⁵
