• Census: He appeared on the census of 23 June 1880 at Bath, Beaufort Co., NC. Balie(Bailey) is 53 yrs old, Mary ( his wife) is 46. In addition to his children, Balie has 4 servants living with them. One of the servants is 21 year old Harvey Rice who would later marry Mary Skittletharpe.⁵
• Deed: He recorded a deed on 25 February 1886 at Beaufort Co., NC. This indenture made and executed this the 20 day of January 1886 by and between Jesse A. Perry and Mary D. Perry his wife of the County of Halifax and state of North Carolina and James L. Fowle as trustee for the said Jesse A. amd Mary D. Perry of the county of Beaufort and state aforesaid all parties of the first part and Joshua B. Skittlethapre of the said State and County of Beaufort party of the second part. Witnesseth: That the parties of the first part for and in consideration of the delivery to them of (70) seventy (500) hundred pound bales of Lin cotton by the part of the second part the receipt of which is acknowledged have given granted, bargained, and sold and by the presents give, grant, bargain, sell and convey to the said Joshua B. Skittletharpe and his heirs all the westernmost part of the farm in Beaufort County state of North Carolina below Bath on the NOrth Side of Pamilico River known as the "Maryland Farm" which lies west of the main canal which runs from Mixons Creek in a straight line northwardly with the canal to John Rivis line containing about three hundred fifty acres by estimation including the dwelling and other houses with the appurtenances thereto belonging which lands adjoining the lands of the late D.M. Carter, John Rivis and the Gibbs heirs and are part of the tracts conveyed by Samuel R. Fowle to James R/L. Fowle iin trust for said Jess A. Perry wife Mary D. Perry by deed dated Oct 31, 1876 and registered in the Register's office of Beaufort County in Book 41 pages 228 and 229 as referendthere. The timber, suitable for lumber, iin Jackson Swamp is excluded from this transaction.⁶

  That said J.B. Skittletharpe in consideration of fifty cents to be paid by the Colored School District No. 12, the receipt of which is hereby acknowledged, has bargained and sold and by these presents does bargain sell and convey to said District 12 and their sucessors, a certain tract of land in Bath township, Beaufort County, state of N.C., adjoining the lands of Ed Gibbs and the Colored Peoples Church on the main road on West side of raod commencing at the Church ground and runnign East 35 years then straight in the woods 70 yards, then back to the Church grounds or Ed Gibbs the above to contain just one half acre and that if the above ground is vacated two years then the colored school has no right to build and the ground goes back to J.B. Skittletharpe, his heirs and assigns forever.
  The deed was proven 18 May 1908. Before me, a Justice of the Peace in and for said state and county aforesaid this day personally appeared before me J.T. Skittletharpe who being by me duly sworn deposes and says, that he is 47 years of age, that he knew J.B. Skittletharpe and that said J.B. Skittletharpe died about three years ago, and that he knows and is familiar with the handwriting and signature of said J.B. Skittletharpe, having often seen him write. That the name of the said J.B. Skittletharpe which is subscribed to the foregoing deed from J. B. Skittletharpe to the Colored School District 12, the grantor thereto and in every part and letter of said name is in the true and genuine handwriting of said J.B. Skittletharpe and the J.B. Skittletharpe, the grantor, the grantor to said deed is dead adn I believe said deed to be a boni fide deed.

  Witnesseth: That the said J.B. Skittletharpe in consideration of One Hundred Dollars ($100) to him paid by Eva M. Skittletharpe, the receipt of which is hereby acknowledged and natural love and affection has bargained and sold and by these presents do bargain, sell, and convey to said Eva M. Skittletharpe, her heris and assigns, a certain tract or parcel of land in Beaufort County, State of North Carolina, adjoining the land of Gibbs and others and being a prt of tghe Maryland farm bounded as follows:
  Beginning on Mixons Creek at a cypress on East side of my landing road, running with the landing road northerly to the main road, then westerly with the main road about one hundred yards to south west corner of my gin house, including gin house, the in a straight line northerly far enough to include barn and stables, by estimation about one hundred and sixty yards, then easterly a straight line to the big ditch by the farm road, then northerly about nine hundred yards with big ditch to end of big ditch, then a straight line, same course as big ditch about two hundred yards to a sweet gum, marked for purposee of the deed, then running at right angles with said course easterly to the corner of Gibbs line, there with said Gibbs line to the head of the canal, then with the canal a straight line to Mixon's creek, to the beginning containing two hundred acres by estimation (200) also all my household and kitchen furniture that I now possess in my dwelling.
  This deed is intended to include my dwelling, barn, stables, curtiledge.¹⁰
