Captured at Roanoke Island on February 8, 1862, and paroled at Elizabeth City on 21 Feb 1862. Exchanged in August, 1862. Present or accounted for until a minne ball fractured his left leg at Chapins Bluff and he was captured at Fort Harrison, Va., September 30, 1864. His left leg was amputated below the knee at the U.S.A. General Hospital at Fort Monroe, Va.. Transferred to Camp Hamilton, Va., April 13, 1865. Released on 29 May 1865.
    Maria P. Faulkner verified that he did lose a leg in the Civil War and that one of his grandaughter's still has his prosthesis from the Civil War.3,1,4
